Unfair Comparisons

The other day I was at a friends house for an Activity Day Girl activity. Another mom and I were chatting, and she commented on how clean the house was compared to hers.
I reminded her that we all put our best foot forward, and thats one reason maybe the house looked so great.
And then we discussed our dirty kitchen floors, and how we would be so embarassed if someone came over right then.
Why do we compare our WORST to everyone else's BEST? Its the day you are in yoga pants that you spot your friend at the grocery all glammed up that you beat yourself up. She wears yoga pants too, just not on THAT particular day.
It's easier said than done, but let's cut ourselves a break!

ugh! She should have come into my bedroom! (the dumping place) Or any of the kids' bedrooms for that matter. IT WAS ONLY CLEAN BECAUSE I HAD PEOPLE COMING OVER! Just come over unannounced and you will see how we really live. When I read this, I was between laughing and crying. My house is almost never clean...and I would never want anyone to feel bad because of how my house looked!

I'm with you on that one. And why do we POINT it out? I had Izzy over the other day and when Anne came to pick her up I apologized for having a messy house. Why do we point that out? Maybe she wouldn't have noticed...maybe she would have thought - well she's had an extra kid running around her all afternoon. Or truthfully - she's 16 - why would she care? But we do it. I once had a VT remind me that we ALL wear shoes. We all use dishes. Why apologize when there are shoes by the front door or dishes piled in the sink. I remember what she said - but I rarely remember to take it to heart.

I actually had one of Tayler's little friends come pound on the front door and ring the doorbell 20 times and then when I opened the door he said, "No offense but it's a pigsty in here. No offense." The best part is there was just a train set out and my big soft box out. It wasn't even that dirty compared to how it gets. I seriously considered saying "No offense but you're ugly. No offense." Yeah, I'm pretty mature about the whole thing.
